The Tribune Sounds Off: BESE members’ only allegiance is to public school students

In a recent commentary, The New Orleans Tribune wrote: “Here at The Tribune, we vehemently urge voters to elect someone to BESE who is “with” what is best for all of the children of New Orleans.”

Tribune writer Anitra Brown continues:

New Orleans Tribune

“It is unnerving to hear it suggested that a candidate for BESE isn’t right for the seat because he or she is not “with” reform. And the outright declaration that BESE needs a pro-reform member representing District 2, is even more disconcerting. Such notions perfectly illustrate what has been taking place in this city since Katrina, especially as it relates to public education. This “get on the bandwagon or get run over” mentality has no place in a democratic society. Public officials are not elected to ride waves. If anything, we need them to make waves, not go along to get along.

As the race for the District 2 seat on the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) nears, it is important to note that this elected position is not about pro-reform or anti-reform. It is about students and education.”
