Blue Cross Blue Shield gives ‘apple’ a day through Nov 30

Roll up your sleeve, limber up your smile muscles and get your shot face ready, because Take Your Best Shot is back. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana is bringing back its popular campaign that encourages Louisianians to get a flu shot.

The insurance company is bringing attention to the flu shot by giving away “an Apple a day” through its website,

Through Nov. 30, Blue Cross will give away an iPod shuffle every day to winners of its online Take Your Best Shot contest.
Contestants submit a photo of their “shot face,” the face they make during the tiny moment of discomfort they experience when getting the flu vaccine. Visitors to the website vote on their favorite photos, and friends of contestants can vote through Facebook. One grand prize winner will win an iPad.

This year, Blue Cross is also introducing Your Shot at Stardom, an online karaoke contest where aspiring singers submit a video of themselves performing the Take Your Best Shot jingle, composed by Jep Epstein. The video with the most votes by Nov. 30 will win an iPad 2.

Fully insured Blue Cross members won’t pay for the flu vaccination when they visit a doctor, clinic, pharmacy or other provider in the network. This benefit also applies to members of HMO Louisiana, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Blue Cross.

The best way to prevent the flu is to get a vaccine each season. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the influenza virus mutates year-to-year, which means getting an annual shot is important to prevent disease. The flu is highly contagious and can be easily spread. Young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions are especially susceptible. The vaccine should cover you through the entire flu season, which typically ends in May.

More than 15,000 Louisianians participated in the Take Your Best Shot campaign last year by showing their shot faces and voting online. Claims for flu shots by Blue Cross members skyrocketed by 64% year-over-year, meaning 118,482 more people got their flu shots. The campaign won a slew of advertising and healthcare industry awards.

“The numbers show that wellness and preventive care, including the flu shot, just work,” said Blue Cross President & CEO Mike Reitz. “We work with our members every day to make sure they have the tools they need to stay well. Making our members aware of preventive care is one of our most important jobs.”
