Urban League releases ‘State of Black America 2012’

More than the economy, more than jobs, more than an excellent education for all children, the single issue that arguably stands to have the greatest impact on the future of Black America in 2012 is the vote.

The 36th edition of The State of Black America examines how increased civic engagement by people of color will aid urban communities in their attainment of educational and employment success, empowering both these individual communities and the entire nation. The publication opens with the 8th installment of the National Urban League Equality Index of Black America and the 3rd installment of the National Urban League Equality Index of Hispanic America. In interpreting the Index, let’s assume we could use a pie to represent how well African Americans and Hispanics are doing, compared to whites, in the areas of economics, health, education, social justice and civic engagement. The Equality Index measures the share of that pie which African Americans and Hispanics get.
