Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated—Nu Gamma Omega Chapter will honor Beth Meeks, executive director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and State Reps. Helena Moreno (D-New Orleans) and Alfred C. Williams (D-Baton Rouge) at its inaugural domestic violence benefit, Night of Promise, on October 16. The event starts at 6pm, at the LSU Rural Life Museum Visitors Center, 4560 Essen Lane in Baton Rouge.Night of Promise flier new

The advocates are being recognized for their exceptional service in the fight against domestic violence in Louisiana, and will receive the Chapter’s first Aleria’s Promise Domestic Violence Advocacy awards, said Linda E. Brown, Chapter president.

During the 2014 legislative session, Moreno and Williams sponsored legislation expanding protections for domestic violence victims that has become state law, giving Louisiana some of the toughest domestic violence laws in the nation. Beth Meeks was instrumental in garnering public support for the package of bills that would strengthen domestic violence laws, resulting in its overwhelming passage by the state Legislature. “Because of their efforts, we know there will be fewer domestic violence-related deaths in Louisiana next year,” Brown said.

Night of Promise is a program of Aleria’s Promise, the Chapter’s domestic violence initiative. The initiative was created following the murder of a chapter member, Aleria Cyrus Reed, by her estranged husband on January 15, 2014. “We promised not to let Aleria’s death be in vain; thus the name,” said Aleria’s Promise chairwoman Jacqueline A. Nash.

The initiative focuses on awareness, education, direct services, and prevention programs to end the devastating cycle of domestic violence through three programmatic areas: outreach (survivor, faith-based, community, and advocacy), prevention (youth-oriented anger management resource procurement and development), and direct services (funding to Iris Domestic Violence Center to defray legal fees and relocation costs for victims), Nash said.

The Aleria’s Promise Domestic Violence Advocacy Award is a service award to be given annually by the Aleria’s Promise initiative to individuals who endeavor to improve the quality of life of domestic violence victims in Louisiana through legislative, legal, and/or community advocacy, she said.

“Night of Promise will be an absolutely wonderful, elegant evening…a fashion show, silent auction, live music, great food, and the Aleria’s Promise Domestic Violence Advocacy Awards presentation,” said Nash. Proceeds from the event will provide funding for educational programs, housing resources, legal fees, and relocation costs for displaced domestic violence victims.

Tickets for Night of Promise are $50; sponsorships are available. For tickets and more information, visit
