Southern University campuses graduates nearly 1,600

The Southern University System graduated 1,673 students from four of its campuses during recently held spring commencement exercises across the state.
Graduates came from a number of cities and towns in Louisiana, including New Orleans, Melville, Lake Providence, Maurice, Baton Rouge and Lafayette. They came from Texas, California, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, and a host of other states. The graduation list also showed students from the Bahamas to Africa.
“The sheer number of our graduates shows that Southern University continues to have a significant impact on the economic viability of our state and nation,” said System President Ronald Mason Jr. “Our graduates will improve community after community here and across the nation by playing pivotal decision-making roles in the day-to-day operation of this country.”
The SU System, the only predominantly African-American college system in the U.S., is comprised of five campuses, four of which have degree-granting programs. Those campuses are located in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport.
Southern University Baton Rouge and SU New Orleans have undergraduate through doctorate degree programs. The Shreveport campus is a two-year degree institution. The Southern University Law Center is adjacent to the Baton Rouge campus.
The campus-by-campus breakdown of spring 2015 graduates, shows: Baton Rouge with 665 graduates; New Orleans, 500; Shreveport, 343; and the Law Center, 165.
The degrees span a number of disciplines, including nursing, education, business, engineering, the sciences, the arts, and law.
